Rapides Parish Jane Doe

On November 5, 1980, the partial skeleton of a young white female was found by a hunter in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. The victim, aged fifteen to nineteen, was approximately five feet to five feet five inches tall; her weight could not be estimated. She had received dental care, as some fillings were found in the teeth of the skull. The skeleton of a dog was also found near the Jane Doe, but it is not possible to confirm if it was hers. A local man stated he had shot the dog but did not know of the victim's presence at the scene. A pair of gray, cotton wool socks were the only clothing found at the scene. Shoulder-length brown hair was also found near the body, which was presumed to be the victim's. Her remains may have been at the location from two months to two and a half years and one or both of her hands and limbs were never found. Her cause of death has never been determined.

RAPIDES PARISH, La. (KPLC) - Authorities believe they have solved a cold case that dates to 1980.

Skeletal remains were found in a wooded area near Nichols Cemetery Road and La. 28 in the Gardner area on Nov. 5, 1980, according to information from the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Skeletal remains were found in a wooded area near Nichols Cemetery Road and La. 28 in the Gardner area on Nov. 5, 1980, according to information from the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation was originally assigned to Det. William E. Hilton. His investigation reviewed missing persons reports in the Rapides Parish area as well as surrounding states and was assisted by the LSU FACES Lab. It was the FACES Lab that was able to determine that the victim was a white female between 16 and 21. It also determined that her body had been in the elements at least two months. The FACES Lab documented a DNA profile and reconstructed a likeness of the victim, which was shared on missing person’s websites.

But a positive identification was unable to be made and the case became cold. The Sheriff’s Office says it received new information in 2014, though, and Leo Laird, 64, and Gary Joseph Haymon, 54, both of Oakdale, were identified as suspects.

RAPIDES PARISH JANE DOE: WF, 15-19, found in Rapides Parish, LA - 5 November 1980 *Donna Brazzell* 6Uo0cIT

In July 2019, the body was positively identified as Donna Gayle Brazzell, a resident of the Alexandria/Pineville area who was around 18 at the time of her death.

Authorities have not said what ties Laird and Haymon to the case, but says “sufficient probable cause was established” to issue arrest warrants for the men. Both were arrested on counts of first-degree murder, first-degree rape and aggravated kidnapping.

Laird, who would have been in his 20s at the time of the alleged crime, was booked into the Rapides Parish Detention Center on on Aug. 14. He is being held on $1 million bond.

Haymon, who would have been in his teens, is currently serving a 49-year sentence for other convictions: second-degree kidnapping, first-degree robbery and public bribery. His projected released date is in 2047. Haymon, who is imprisoned at the Avoyelles Correctional Center, will be booked into the Rapides Parish Detention Center on the new allegations.

Rapides Parish authorities say the investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be filed.

2 arrested in 38-year-old cold case in Louisiana

ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) — A sheriff’s office in Louisiana has announced two arrests in a decades old cold case.

News outlets report 64-year-old Leo Laird and 54-year-old Gary Haymon have been charged in the death of 18-year-old Donna Gayle Brazzell.

A Facebook post Monday from the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office says skeletal remains were found in the Gardner area on Nov. 5, 1980. Brazzell was identified as the victim last month through DNA testing.

Haymon and Laird were named as suspects in 2014. Both are now charged with first-degree murder, first-degree rape and aggravated kidnapping.

Laird was arrested Wednesday. Haymon is already serving a 49-year prison sentence but is expected to be booked for the new charges.

It’s unclear whether Haymon or Laird had attorneys who could speak on their behalf.

Rapides Deputies solve 38-year-old cold case
Two men now accused of murder, rape

Rapides Parish Sheriff's deputies have solved a 38-year-old cold case.

Leo Laird, 64, and Gary Haymon, 54, both of Oakdale, are now accused of First Degree Murder, First Degree Rape and Aggravated Kidnapping in the 1980 slaying of Donna Brazzell, a spokesman for the sheriff said.

The investigation began in November 1980 when skeletal remains were found near La. 28 in the Gardner area. Detectives over the years scoured missing persons reports from Louisiana and neighboring states, and enlished the help of the LSU FACES lab to try to identify the body. The lab said the victim was a female who was between 16 and 21 years old when she died. She'd been dead for months, or maybe years, when her skeleton was found, the spokesman said.

The cold case was passed from detective to detective for years until 2014, when the sheriff's office received some information in the case. These new leads led to Laird and Haymon as suspects, the spokesman said.

Last month, more information was provided to deputies, this time about the victim's identity. FACES and State Police Crime labs helped with DNA testing, and the victim was identified as Donna Gayle Brazzell. She was 18 when she disappeared from the Alexandria/Pineville area where she had been living.

Detectives continued to follow leads, and obtained arrest warrants for Laird and Haymon. Laird was arrested on August 14 and booked into the Rapides Parish Detention Center, where he remains in lieu of $1 million bond for the rape and kidnapping charges. No bond has been set on the murder charge, the spokesman said.

Haymon currently is in the custody of the Louisiana Department of Corrections for convictions on Second Degree Kidnapping, First Degree Robbery, and Public Bribery charges. Haymon is currently serving a forty-nine year sentence and is currently projected to be released in 2047. Arrangements are in place to have Haymon booked into the Rapides Parish Detention Center in reference to his new charges, the spokesman said.

Detectives state their investigation is still ongoing and additional charges may be filed.

Two Oakdale men have been arrested in a cold-case homicide, accused in the kidnapping, rape and homicide of an 18-year-old woman whose remains were found in in the Gardner area in November 1980.

The identity of the victim, Donna Gayle Brazzell, remained a mystery until July, when the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office got information about her identity that was confirmed through DNA testing.

That happened five years after the sheriff's office also received other information that led detectives to identify Leo Laird, 64, and Gary Joseph Haymon, 54, as suspects.

After Brazzell was identified, warrants were obtained for Laird and Haymon on charges of first-degree murder, first-degree rape and aggravated kidnapping in the 39-year-old case.

Laird, of the 1600 block of La. Highway 10 in Oakdale, was arrested on Aug. 14. He was booked into the Rapides Parish Detention Center, where he remains. Bond was set at $1 million. No bond has been set on the first-degree murder charge, according to a release.

Laird lists an address in the 1100 block of Hickory Street in Elizabeth in jail records.

Haymon already is in prison, serving a 49-year sentence for second-degree kidnapping, first-degree robbery and public bribery. He was set for release in 2047, but arrangements "are in place to have Haymon booked into the Rapides Parish Detention Center in reference to his new charges," it reads.

The case was opened on Nov. 5, 1980, when the sheriff's office got a report about skeletal remains found in a wooded area off La. Highway 28 West near Nichols Cemetery Road.

Sheriff William Earl Hilton was assigned the case as a detective, but it eventually grew cold. Through the work of Louisiana State University's Repository for Missing and Unidentified Persons (FACES Lab), it was determined the victim was between 16 and 21 years of age at the time of death.

Brazzell's remains likely were in the woods for between two months to one year or more.

The lab did a DNA profile and a reconstruction of Brazzell's face that was shared on its website. "Over the years, it would be shared on many other web-based sites, along with social media sites," reads the release.

Brazzell had been living in the Alexandria-Pineville area at the time of her death.

An investigation is continuing, and detectives say more charges could be filed.

ALEXANDRIA, LA. (AP) — A sheriff's office in Louisiana has announced two arrests in a decades old cold case.

News outlets report 64-year-old Leo Laird and 54-year-old Gary Haymon have been charged in the death of 18-year-old Donna Gayle Brazzell.

A Facebook post Monday from the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office says skeletal remains were found in the Gardner area on Nov.

It's unclear whether Haymon or Laird had attorneys who could speak on their behalf.
