More than a dozen Mohave County homicides remain unsolved

Jun 11, 2014

By JIM SECKLER

The Daily News

KINGMAN — While one of the oldest cold cases in Mohave County may have been solved, several others remain foundering with authorities in need of clues to rekindle their investigations.

After driving from North Carolina to Arizona, Matthew Gibson turned himself in to the Winslow Police Department on Thursday and was charged with the 1997 murder of Barbara Leone Brown, 38. Her husband reported her missing June 26, 1997, from their Kingman home. Her beaten body was found in Bullhead City five days later in the bushes near the Colorado River.

The August 2013 arrest of Chase Robert Salveson for the August 2011 murder of Raymond Arthur Sanchez, 36, in Bullhead City came after two years of investigation. Salveson’s case is pending in Superior Court.

Zane Mason was captured in October 2012 in California and is charged with the Aug. 22, 2011, murder of Gregory Stephen Zeller, 51, of Fort Mohave.

There are still more than a dozen other unsolved homicides, including the slaying of a Kingman man, Robert Egar Buss, 85, who was found in November 2009. Buss was stabbed to death at his home in the 4500 block of Vernetti Lane.

Another unsolved homicide in Kingman is that of Annette Rounseville, 46, who was riding a bicycle Dec. 12, 2007, at Melody and John L avenues in north

Kingman when she was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in a turquoise-colored car.

Another Kingman woman, 80-year-old Anna Hammonds, was believed killed during a 2007 Christmas Day burglary of her home in the 4200 block of Irving Road.

Sheriff’s detectives are also investigating the death of Letha James, a 63-year-old Kingman woman who was found shot to death the morning of Oct. 16, 2004. She was found in her bed at her home in the 3200 block of Snavely Avenue in Kingman.

The body of Millie Harvey was found Dec. 29, 2003, just west of Katherine Mine Road and north of Highway 68. Harvey, 44, of Las Vegas, is believed to have been strangled to death in mid-December of 2003. Harvey’s birth name was Millie Rae Ruth Dauster and was also known as Millie Swift.

Stanley John Alecksynas’ body was discovered near Oatman on April 2, 2002, near the entrance to the Iowa Mine several miles south of Oatman Road. Search and rescuers discovered 56-year-old Alecksynas’ body, the victim of an apparent gunshot.

On the night of Dec. 21, 2001, Lee Livesay, 83, of Valle Vista, was struck and killed by an unknown driver while walking along state Route 66 near Valle Vista.

Keith Ardell Benefield, 16, was walking along Pierce Ferry Road April 11, 2001, about a mile from where he lived in Dolan Springs when he was beaten to death, possibly with a baseball bat. He died from head injuries at a Kingman hospital. He had lived in California with his mother before he moved to Dolan Springs several months before his death.

William Lee Schanz, 57, was shot once in the back of the head while Ronald Hilbert, 68, was severely beaten May 22, 1998, at their jewelry store on West Beale Street in Kingman. Hilbert remained in a coma until his death in 2002. Police detectives believed the murders were a hate crime. There were no signs of robbery, no cash or merchandise were taken, nor were Schanz’s or Hilbert’s wallets stolen.

Marie Evans, 24, of Chloride, was discovered beaten and left alongside a road in Golden Valley Nov. 7, 1997. It is believed she had left with a man in a borrowed car late that night never to return to her parents’ Chloride home.

The body of 19-year-old Rhonda Jeannette Wright was found locked in a Bullhead City shed that had been set on fire in March 1993.

Workers were digging a trench near Riverside Drive and Castleberry Lane in Bullhead City in 1989 when they dug up the corpse of an unidentified woman believed to be in her early 20s. Nicknamed Castleberry Kate, the body was found in a shallow grave, which may have been there for five to 10 years before 1989.

In one of the oldest unsolved cases, Bullhead City police detectives are looking for suspects in the beating death of Pamela Simmons, 35, whose body was found Oct. 28, 1986, dumped off the side of Highway 68 about five miles from Bullhead City.

If anyone has information to any of these crimes, they can contact their local law enforcement or Mohave Silent Witness at 928-753-1234.

Unsolved murders
Police still seeking leads in 14 area homicide cases

By JIM SECKLER/The Daily News Jun 25, 2010

KINGMAN — More than a dozen cold murder cases still baffle Mohave County law enforcement officers.

Police and sheriff detectives still are searching for the killers in 14 unsolved murders throughout the county.

In 2009, sheriff detectives solved the previously unsolved murder of Thereasa Ann Davis, 45, of Mohave Valley. She was found stabbed to death Feb. 10, 2003, on a dirt road off Indian Lane about a mile from a cemetery. Robert James Dyer was arrested in August 2009 and charged with her murder.

That still leaves 14 unsolved murders, including the most recent murder of an elderly Kingman man, Robert Egar Buss, 85, who was found stabbed to death at his home in the 4500 block of Vernetti Lane.

Another unsolved murder in Kingman was that of Annette Rounseville, 46, who was riding a bicycle Dec. 12, 2007, at Melody and John L. avenues in north Kingman when she was struck and killed by a hit and run driver.

Another woman, Anna Hammonds, 80, was believed killed around Dec. 25, 2007, in her home in the 4200 block of Irving Road, also in northern Kingman.

Sheriff’s detectives also are investigating the death of Letha James, a 63-year-old Kingman woman who was found shot to death the morning of Oct. 16, 2004. She was found in bed at her home in the 3200 block of Snavely Avenue in Kingman.

On Dec. 29, 2003, the body of Millie Harvey was found just west of Katherine Mine Road and north of Highway 68. Harvey, 44, of Las Vegas, is believed to have been strangled to death in mid-December of 2003. Harvey’s birth name was Millie Rae Ruth Dauster. She also was known as Millie Swift.

Stanley John Alecksynas’ body was discovered near Oatman on April 2, 2002, near the entrance to the Iowa mine several miles south of Oatman Road. Alecksynas, 56, reportedly left his home around 9 a.m. to check on his property. His wife called police later that morning when he failed to return. MCSO search and rescuers discovered his body early the next morning, the victim of an apparent gunshot.

In December 2001, a Valle Vista man was struck and killed by an unknown driver while walking along state Route 66. Lee Livesay, 83, was killed sometime on the night of Dec. 21, 2001, while walking along the highway near the entrance into Valle Vista.

On April 11, 2001, Keith Ardell Benefield, 16, of Dolan Springs, was beaten to death, possibly with a baseball bat, while he walked along Pierce Ferry Road about a mile from where he lived. Benefield was treated by local paramedics and later died from head injuries at a Kingman hospital. Benefield had lived in California with his mother before he moved to Dolan Springs several months before his death.

A 12-year-old double homicide still haunts Kingman police detectives. William Lee Schanz, 57, was shot once in the back of the head while Ronald Hilbert, 68, was severely beaten May 22, 1998, at their jewelry store on West Beale Street. Hilbert remained in a coma until his death in 2002. Police detectives believed the murders were a hate crime since Schanz or Hilbert were reportedly homosexuals. There were no signs of robbery, no cash or merchandise were taken, nor were Schanz’s or Hilbert’s wallets stolen.

The beaten body of Marie Evans, 24, of Chloride, was discovered alongside a road in Golden Valley Nov. 7, 1997. It is believed she had left with a man in a borrowed car late that night, never to return to her parent’s Chloride home.

The body of Rhonda Jeannette Wright, who was about 19, was found locked in a Bullhead City shed that had been set on fire in March 1993.

In 1989, utility workers were digging a trench near Riverside Drive and Castleberry Lane when they dug up the corpse of an unidentified woman believed to be in her early 20s.

Unsolved murders continue to plague law enforcement

By JIM SECKLER/The Daily News May 26, 2009

KINGMAN - Several cold cases, some even decades old, still haunt Mohave County law enforcement officers.

Police and sheriff detectives still are searching for the killers of about a dozen unsolved murders throughout the county.

The previous unsolved murder of Jaime Ramos Banuelos, 32, of Bullhead City, who was found Feb. 7, 2008, off Silver Creek Road, may have been solved with the arrest Santiago Fidel Sanchez and Jorge Guerrero for his murder. Their cases currently are progressing in Superior Court.

Another unsolved murder may have a suspect but Mohave Count Attorney Matt Smith does not have the evidence to prosecute. Carolyn Dubois, 50, has not been seen since Jan. 1, 2005, and remains missing. She was last known to live in a Kingman apartment. Smith believes Matthew McCalman is the prime suspect in Dubois' murder. McCalman was sentenced last year to 16 years in prison for another murder in Bullhead City in 2007.

Sheriff detectives are still looking for Gerardo Mendoza, 25, of California. Mendoza is charged with allegedly shooting and killing Joseph Alan Gravett, of Bullhead City, Jan. 22, 2005, at a residence in the 1500 block of Terral Lane in Fort Mohave.

The Bullhead City Police Department also still is looking for Adalberto Lua Jr., 22, in connection with the alleged stabbing death of Anthony Diaz, 20. Diaz's body was found Dec. 28, 2007, near Gold Rush and Ramar roads. Lua is now featured on the television show “America's Most Wanted.” The show's Web site states that Lua may be in Phoenix or Mexico and may be dressed as a woman.

Several murders, however, have gone unsolved including Annette Rounseville, 46, who was riding a bicycle Dec. 12, 2007, at Melody and John L. avenues in north Kingman when she was struck and killed by a car.

Another woman, Anna Hammonds, 80, was believed killed around Dec. 25, 2007, in her home in the 4200 block of Irving Road, also in northern Kingman.

Sheriff's detectives are also investigating the death of Letha James, a 63-year-old Kingman woman who was found shot to death the morning of Oct. 16, 2004. She was found in her bed at her home in the 3200 block of Snavely Avenue in Kingman.

A hiker found the body of Millie Harvey Dec. 29, 2003, just west of Katherine Mine Road and a mile and a half north of Highway 68. Harvey, 44, of Las Vegas, is believed to have been strangled to death in mid-December of 2003. Harvey's birth name was Millie Rae Ruth Dauster and was also known as Millie Swift.

The body of Thereasa Ann Davis, 45, was found earlier in 2003. Davis, a longtime resident of Mohave Valley, was found Feb. 10, 2003, on a dirt road off Indian Lane about a mile from the Desert Lawn Memorial Cemetery. Davis, who is believed to have been involved in drugs, had been stabbed to death. Not having a car, she either walked or hitched rides. Sheriff's detectives believe she was killed about 12 hours before a Fort Mojave tribal officer found her body. She reportedly was in Needles, Laughlin and Mohave Valley the day before her death.

Stanley John Alecksynas' body was discovered near Oatman April 2, 2002, near the entrance to the Iowa mine several miles south of Oatman Road. Alecksynas, 56, reportedly left his home around 9 a.m. to check on property he and his wife leased. His wife called police later that morning when he failed to return. MCSO search and rescuers discovered his body early the next morning, the victim of an apparent gunshot.

About four months earlier, a Valle Vista man was struck and killed by an unknown driver while walking along Route 66. Lee Livesay, 83, was killed sometime the night of Dec. 21, 2001, while walking along the highway near the entrance into Valle Vista.

On April 11, 2001, a 16-year-old Dolan Springs boy was beaten to death, possibly with a baseball bat while he walked along Pierce Ferry Road. Keith Ardell Benefield was killed about a mile from where he lived. Benefield was treated by local paramedics and later died from head injuries at a Kingman hospital. Benefield had lived in California with his mother before he moved to Dolan Springs several months before his death.

The suspect in a double homicide that occurred 11 years ago still eludes Kingman police detectives today. William Lee Schanz, 57, was shot once in the back of the head while Ronald Hilbert, 68, was severely beaten May 22, 1998 at their jewelry store on West Beale Street. Hilbert remained in a coma until his death in 2002. There were no signs of robbery, no cash or merchandise were taken, nor were Schanz or Hilbert's wallets stolen. Police detectives believed the Schanz's killing and Hilbert's beating was a hate crime since Schanz and Hilbert were reportedly homosexuals.

The body of Marie Evans was discovered alongside a road in Golden Valley Nov. 7, 1997. The 24-year-old Chloride woman was found with severe head injuries. It is believed she had left with a man in a borrowed car late that night never to return to her parent's Chloride home. Drugs may have played a role in the killing.

Another mysterious death surrounding a woman remains unsolved. Rhonda Jeannette Wright, who was about 19 years old in March 1993, was locked in a Bullhead City shed that was set on fire.

Utility workers digging a trench near Riverside Drive and Castleberry Lane in 1989 also dug up the corpse of an unidentified woman believed to be in her early 20s. Nicknamed Castleberry Kate, the body was found in a shallow grave, which may have been there for five to 10 years before 1989. Bullhead City police detectives now have more resources to track down people who may have known her.

Unsolved murders still on county books

By JIM SECKLER/The Daily News Jul 4, 2013

KINGMAN — More than a dozen cold cases still haunt detectives throughout Mohave County.

One cold case was solved last year when Zane Mason, a suspect featured on the television show “America’s Most Wanted,” was captured in October 2012 in California. Mason is charged with the murder of Gregory Stephen Zeller, 51, of Fort Mohave. Zeller was stabbed Aug. 22, 2011, at a home on East Joy Lane.

Bullhead City police are still actively investigating the murder of Raymond Arthur Sanchez, 36, of Bullhead City, which they do not consider as an unsolved murder. Detectives have suspects in mind who are in custody for other crimes and are asking the public with any information to come forward. There is a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Sanchez’s murderer. Sanchez’s body was found Aug. 21, 2011, wrapped in plastic in the Colorado River Nature Center. He had been stabbed numerous times.

There are still 14 other unsolved murders that baffle police, including the murder of an elderly Kingman man, Robert Egar Buss, 85, whose body was found in November 2009 stabbed to death at his home in the 4500 block of Vernetti Lane.

Cold cases haunt area law enforcement

Jun 21, 2012

KINGMAN — More than a dozen cold cases still haunt detectives throughout the Mohave County.

There are 16 unsolved murders including the murder of Raymond Arthur Sanchez, 36, of Bullhead City whose body was found Aug. 21, 2011, wrapped in plastic at the Colorado River Nature Center.

Another murder victim, Gregory Stephen Zeller, 51, of Fort Mohave, was also stabbed Aug. 22, 2011 at a home on East Joy Lane. Two men were seen leaving the residence in a car.

Another murder was that of an elderly Kingman man, Robert Egar Buss, 85, whose body was found in November 2009 stabbed to death at his home in the 4500 block of Vernetti Lane.

Another unsolved murder in Kingman was that of Annette Rounseville, 46, who was riding a bicycle Dec. 12, 2007 at Melody and John L. avenues in north Kingman when she was struck and killed by a hit and run driver.

Another woman, 80-year-old Anna Hammonds was believed killed around Dec. 25, 2007 in her home in the 4200 block of Irving Road also in northern Kingman.

Sheriff’s detectives are also investigating the death of Letha James, a 63-year-old Kingman woman who was found shot to death the morning of Oct. 16, 2004. She was found in her bed at her home in the 3200 block of Snavely Avenue in Kingman.

Millie Harvey’s body was found Dec. 29, 2003 just west of Katherine Mine Road and north of Highway 68. Harvey, 44, of Las Vegas is believed to have been strangled to death in mid-December of 2003. Harvey’s birth name was Millie Rae Ruth Dauster and was also known as Millie Swift.

The body of Stanley John Alecksynas, 56, was discovered near Oatman April 2, 2002 near the entrance to the Iowa mine several miles south of Oatman Road. Alecksynas reportedly left his home that morning to check on his property. MCSO search and rescuers discovered his body early the next morning, the victim of an apparent gunshot.

In December 2001, a Valle Vista man was struck and killed by an unknown driver while walking along state Route 66. Lee Livesay, 83, was killed sometime on the night of Dec. 21, 2001 while walking near Valle Vista.

Keith Ardell Benefield, 16, was walking along Pierce Ferry Road April 11, 2001 about a mile from where he lived in of Dolan Springs when he was attacked, possibly with a baseball bat and beaten to death. He died from head injuries at a Kingman hospital. He had lived in California with his mother before he moved to Dolan Springs several months before his death.

William Lee Schanz, 57, was shot once in the back of the head while Ronald Hilbert, 68, was severely beaten May 22, 1998 at their jewelry store on West Beale Street in Kingman. Hilbert remained in a coma until his death in 2002. Police detectives believed the murders were a hate crime. There were no signs of robbery, no cash or merchandise were taken, nor were Schanz or Hilbert’s wallets stolen.

Marie Evans, 24, of Chloride was discovered beaten and left alongside a road in Golden Valley Nov. 7, 1997. It is believed she had left with a man in a borrowed car late that night never to return to her parent’s Chloride home.
