Hosey: The unsolved mystery of the man in the box

A Lockport Powerhouse worker was poking through a pile of debris pulled from the canal when he smelled something rotten.

The mound of junk had been scooped out of the canal and dumped on land. It was routine. Powerhouse workers did this weekly to keep the turbine intakes clear. But this time there was a broken crate among the refuse, and the strong smell of decay seemed to be coming from it.

When the worker took a closer look, he found a man’s body curled up inside the crate. The dead man was dressed in blue work pants and a green work shirt, and he was wearing wool socks and one slipper. He was covered with maggots.

The body had been in the water awhile, maybe a week or so, and decomposition had left it unrecognizable.

The fingerprints had rotted off as well. This was more than 37 years ago. The man’s identity remains a mystery. But there are two guys who are working on that.

Gene Sullivan and Joseph Piper are investigators with the Will County Coroner’s Office. Sullivan’s retired from the Romeoville police and Piper from Lockport. Their caseload with the coroner consists of putting names on 11 John and Jane Doe bodies dating back to 1968.

One of those 11 was the man in the box who turned up at the powerhouse on Wednesday, July 30, 1980.

“This is probably one of the strangest,” Sullivan said.
