Two men target shooting on an oil lease near Highway 31 off Fritz Swanson Road discovered the victim's body lying face down on a burning wood pile. A gas can was found in the vicinity. The victim had been burned over 98% of her body.
Investigators were initially unsure of the victim's sex and race due to the condition of her body. She was also thought to be as young as 13. Semen was found at the crime scene, strongly indicating she had been raped.
On October 2, 2013, Gregg County Sheriff's Office exhumed the victim's body to obtain additional evidence to use against a primary suspect in her homicide. In 2014, a reconstruction was released by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
She is known by the nickname "Lavender Doe."

Police: Man confesses to 2018, 2006 killings of women in Gregg County
A Longview man has confessed to killing a woman whose body was found this past month in a wooded area in the city and to killing an unidentified woman in 2006, police announced Monday.
At a joint press conference, the Longview Police Department released information that showed Joseph Wayne Burnette, 41, confessed last Tuesday to killing Felishia Pearson, whose body was found in July off Birdsong Street in Longview. Gregg County Sheriff Maxey Cerliano said Burnette also confessed to the murder of a woman in Gregg County in 2006, known as “Lavender Doe,” because the woman has not been identified.
Information relating to the murders of Pearson and Lavender Doe was presented to a grand jury Thursday, Longview Police Chief Mike Bishop said. Longview police and the Gregg County Sheriff's Office were notified Monday morning that there was a grand jury indictment for Burnette.
Burnette was initially held in the Gregg County Jail on a $500,000 bond on a charge of failure to register as a sex offender. Burnette's bonds now total to $2.5 million in bonds, after $1 million in bonds for each murder charge were added. Cerliano said Burnette is on suicide watch at the county jail.

There's been some speculation online that Lavander Doe could be Ashley Lee James, missing from Lakewood, Colorado since April 30, 2006. Ashley an away from a shelter called the ''Gemini house'' in April of 2006, she was there because no one knows who her parents were and because she had been living on the streets prior to being put in the shelter.
Since it's been reported no one knows who Ashley's parents are, it's a possible they don't have her DNA in the system. There are also no photographs available of Ashley.
